Remember 9/11, PM tells Afghan doubters

Sydney Morning Herald >> 22nd March 2009

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is urging Australians questioning the nation’s role in Afghanistan to remember the image of the Twin Towers falling.

Sergeant Brett Till last Thursday became the 10th Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan when he tried to defuse an improvised explosive device (IED).

He was the fourth Australian to die from an IED blast in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Till was attempting to defuse the device manually rather than using robotics.

Mr Rudd said the defence head Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston was overseeing a military investigation into the 31-year-old’s death.

“What we will do with the investigation of this brave soldier’s death is go to all the circumstances surrounding it,” he told the Nine Network on Sunday.

“If there are implications flowing from it, in terms of operations on the ground, equipment or any other matter, I am confident the chief of defence force will let us know.”

Mr Rudd urged Australians not to forget the image of the Twin Towers coming down on September 11, 2001.

“We can never forget that, we can’t forget the fact that there were many Australians killed that day as well,” he said.
